ABOUT ME

Soledad Villa is an artist based between Los Angeles and the Inland Empire. Her primary disciplines include photography, and women’s gender studies. She has dedicated eight years to photography, Five years to fine art. She is expected to receive a Bachelors of Fine Arts from the California State University of Long Beach College of the Arts.

Soledad’s multicultural background influences her work as she believes that women of color need more representation in art. She is influenced by the women of color canon. Feminist writers such as Gloria Anzaldúa and Cherrie Morgana have altered her practice of finding identity as an artist. Developing art by form of “Autohistoria Teoria”, Soledad applies her understanding of feminist theories and practices of intersectionality. She bases her works on standards of beauty and her interpretation deconstructing social binaries developed by western culture.

Soledad’s current interest is experimentation based on visiting practices such as sculpture and painting. She is fascinated by the reformatting of a photograph and combines them with other disciplines of art and theory.  She bases this practice on the acts of impulse. Her impulsive choices allow her to reformat the standard photograph and connecting them to her self-portraiture style. She bases her self-portraits and beauty standards and applies them to her everyday life.
